Dear All,
I am sharing a tiny winy small chota sa nanna sa munna sa travelogue of a very small road trip of 117 KMs to & fro we did from Chennai to the Rock Temple at the Sea Shores of Mahabalipuram yesterday 15th August 2012.
What started with a persistent follow up for weeks from our little darling Shrimeenakshi that she wanted to go to a beach for long time was fullfilled yesterday when my wife said why not we drive to Mahabalipuram in the morning 8.45 AM when I came back inside the house after a car cleaning session with my Palio & Linea.
I never knew that while I was down in the parking cleaning the cars the team of 3 Jamuna, little Shrimeenakshi & Master Uthamkumar had plotted behind my back about a drive outside & I did not need any further invitation.
I said Chalo Mahabalipuram.
Chennai to Mahab & back was under 120 KMs & what you will see is some 163 beautiful photos by today evening.
So here we go on a trip to Mahabalipuram which is officially today called MAMALLAPURAM.
Brief Background & History on Mamallapuram:
Mahabalipuram lies on the Coromandel Coast & faces the Bay of Bengal.
This is a very elegant place to visit which has a well established sea port and this place was ruled by the Pallava Dynasty during the 7th and 10th centuries. You will also see a light house.
This was the second capital of the Pallava Dynasty who ruled this part of Tamil Nadu from the well known city of Kanchipuram.
Formerly this place was known and called as Mahabalipuram.
The former name of this place ‘Mahabalipuram’ has a history.
An Asura king Mahabali reined this place and he was defeated by Lord Vishnu and the place was named after Mahabali.
It was during the reign of King Narasimha Varman I, the name Mahabalipuram was changed.
It was renamed mahabalipuram to Mamallapuram till now. There is a story behind.
king Narasimha Varman I was a great and valiant warrior & a great wrestler too.
He was given the title Mamalla which means ‘the great wrestler’ so the name was converted from Mahabalipuram to Mamallapuram considering the great king and his achievements.
The Pallavas rose to great heights & were pioneers in south India.
Pallavas ruled regions of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh between the second to the ninth century CE.
The Pallavas gained prominence after the decline of the Satavahana dynasty from Andhra whom the Pallavas served as feudatories.
The best period of Pallava rule during this period was called the Golden Age of the Pallavas.
The Pallavas were very powerful. They were profound thinkers.
It was during the rule of the Pallavas, great poets, dramatists, artists, artisans, scholars and saints emerged.
One can say that the Pallavas are the pioneers and forerunners of new styles both in art and architecture and mamallapuram is the best place to see their skill and talent.
New sculptures and unique paintings were innovative and exuberant.
The richness in Mahabalipuram was not known to many, as Pallavas did not outlet and expose their quality and innovative creations to the outer world for obvious reasons.
The aestheticism in mahabalipuram was hidden until the late 18th century.
What is so special about mahabalipuram?
Of course every one can point out the rock - cut caves, temples made from a single rock, temples and strives of different structures, and bas-reliefs which are so artistic and sheer creativity.
Mamallpuram is referred as an ‘open-air museum’.
The great pallava kings Narasimha I and Rajasimha have well preserved these stylistic qualities that one enjoys in mahabalipuram even in the present day.
The beauty of the place is not only due to these architecture but the vast casuarinas trees, the silvery sandy beach the classical hand made crafts around have made them all to form what is a collective splendor.
Any visitor who visits mahabalipuram will surely be filled with happiness & will be intoxicated with the grandeur of this place.
A visit to the Mahabalipuram beach was the final icing on the cake.
The Trip from Home started at 10 AM.
Baby Shrimeenakshi came down all prepared with a nice English Hat for an outing with her Elder brother Uthamkumar.
They both got photograhed in the back drop of our 2 Precious FIATs the Palio & Linea.
The Linea was taken out of its parking bay.
I had a great time to photograph its beauty before the lady of my heart & my home got ready & came down.
We all know the ladies always take time he he.. giving the men enough free time.
Some how men are smitten by Women & Cars I dont know why & in which order!
Linea is a real true throughbreed Italian Beauty on wheels.
The Bossa Nova White on the Linea is really Pristine & Regal Royal Color & I really love it because my wife selected this color!
Ah..Finally the lady of the house came down & was escorted by Mama's Little Boy! He sure is her good books!
We started from Nandambakkam near Chennai Trade Center.
We drove via Kathipara Flyover towards Guindy & then on to Velachery to a Tyre Service Shop.
We went to Megains Tyre Service to fix 2 punctures in my 2 rear tyres.
I had picked up 2 nails during my Bangalore Chennai Trip I had done a week before. Both the kids had loads of questions to ask me and I am sure they will be very interested in cars & driving in future.
All the 4 tyres have completed 35000 KMs and might last another 5K KMs and will need to be replaced.
Got a call from my good friend Vijay & spoke with him for long time & also spoke with his wife.
The Blue & Me facility inside the Linea is a great feature & the Linea has a very powerful microphone that can pick up the voices from the back seat & all 4 of us can speak and hear the caller through the speakers loud & clear.
Both the ladies said hello to each other & Vijay's wife had nice words for the kids & said we will catch up soon.
We started from Velachery towards Adayar, Beseant Nagar & headed towards the great ECR Road which leads us to Mahabalipura.
Yeah Mahabali here we come.........Please click on this link below to go to the next page
